All the stars finally aligned for Dave Brown and the Life’s Good Racing!TM team during the first ever night race at Sonoma on November 9, 2013. Closing the season with a win after finishing in 2nd place 5 times out of 6 events brings great momentum to the team moving into 2014.
Any of these USTCC events are tough to win, but add in the complexity of a 2 hour race, pit stops and running around Sonoma Raceway in the dark for the first time and you’ve really got a challenge on your hands. Our BMW M3 was quick enough to be able to qualify on the pole and run flawlessly the entire race.
Fuel mileage was a critical aspect of the race in order to execute a 1-stop strategy. The team did a great job–with the help of Dave “Pitt” Pittenger’s astute calculations of fuel consumption—to stay aware of our position throughout the race so we could carefully manage position, speed, fuel burn rate and overall wear & tear on the car.
>We ran within the top 5 the entire race, and when the race came to a close we were able to run hard while others were slowing significantly in order to manage fuel. With five laps to go our CCI/HAWK Performance/WORKS car was in 2nd place closing in on the leader at a rate of 5 seconds a lap. We probably would not have caught him in time for the checkered flag but with two laps to go the leader faltered….he was out of fuel and had to pit! We cruised home for the win from there with about a 20 sec margin of victory.
Life’s Good Racing!TM along with our partners and friends should be very proud of a great effort this year: six out of seven podium finishes, one win and second place in the overall season championship! Thanks go out to the entire team and, particularly, to our sponsors for making it a great year – HAWK Performance Brakes, Competition Clutch, WORKS, Redline, and SuperTech.
Hang on for more exciting news coming soon about our 2014 season plans!
See you at the races!
