Wow! “Life’s Good Racing!” just completed a very successful weekend of racing at Miller Motorsports Park. It started with a full day Friday of testing for our drivers as they got used to the East Track configuration which non of us had run before. The boys got up to speed fast and we made hardly any adjustments to all three cars! I had a chance to calculate fuel consumption so the boys didn’t start with too much or too little fuel weight so they could finish safely above their required minimum after the Sunday race. That all turned out very close to what I calculated for minimum finish weight when they were weighed at impound after the race and all ended up in our “comfort zone” for weight…! Team driver Michael Whelden (Michael Whelden Racing) qualified on pole for our USTCC race in the LGR #10 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart and that’s where he finished! Michael was the fastest US Touring car all weekend by almost two seconds! Michael had never driven the #10 or at Miller Motorsports Park either and he got up to speed quickly and stayed atop the timing sheet all weekend. Thanks Michael it was fun to watch. Our #11 LGR BMW M3 driven by Beau Borders (Borders Racing) qualified second and finished second. We had to scramble after Sunday qualifying to fix the car because Beau’s fan clutch on the M3 broke and shattered on the last lap of the qualifier damaging the cooling fan. The team hustled and got a new electric fan installed because there was only one hour and fifteen minutes between qualifying and the start of the race! Kudos to team manager Dave Brown for orchestrating the repair, crew chief Chris Hovey for getting a replacement fan from a fellow competitor and especially Gary Minnich and Mark O’Connor for doing the install dirty work that allowed Beau to make the start of the race. Our newest team member Justin Crick (Crickengerger) did a great job qualifying the #11 LGR M3 third and finishing the race in fourth. Justin had some cooling issues late in the race since it was a very “warm” day of 98 degrees, so he had slow up a bit and handed over third place to Patrick Cho in his Nissan Z in the latter stages of the race in order to ensure finishing. All in all it was a very exciting, fun and successful weekend. So now it’s off to our next event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca July 31st, August 1st & 2nd. Don’t miss that one because it will be a packed event which not only includes USTCC but it will include combined racingfrom NASA Nor-Cal and NASA So-Cal……..PittMichael Whelden at speed. Beau Borders giving his bumper to some fans after the race. Third place finisher, Patrick Cho tore it off during the last lap of the race trying to pass Beau. The result, no rear bumper cover but a solid second place for Beau. Justin Crickenberger sitting in his #11 M3 with daughter Madison. Madison was showing Dad where to place his hand on the steering wheel for the upcoming race…..!
